Connecting & Engaging With Purpose on LinkedIn
Connecting With Intention on LinkedIn
LinkedIn works best when you move beyond following and start connecting with intention.
Follow vs Connect (what most people miss)
Following someone means you see their content, they won’t necessarily see you
Connecting opens the door to conversation, visibility, and relationship-building
If you don’t see a Connect button on someone’s profile:
Open their profile
Click the three dots next to “Following”
Select Connect from the list
(I’ve included images below showing where to find this.)
Sending better connection requests
If you’re using LinkedIn Premium on desktop, you’ll have the option to add a note when sending a connection request, use it.
Before connecting:
Read their profile
Look for shared interests, groups, roles, or values
A simple, personalised note works best, for example:
“I saw you’re involved in [XYZ group] and really liked your approach to leadership. I’d love to connect and learn more.”
Avoid generic messages, especially if you’re connecting with purpose — for example, with someone who works at a company you’re interested in.
If you don’t have Premium or are connecting via mobile, you won’t be able to add a note. In that case:
Send the connection request
Once they accept, follow up with a short, personalised message
Again, take a moment to do your research and reference something specific from their profile.
Connecting with intention isn’t about volume; it’s about quality and relevance.
Networking tip: use your QR code
You can quickly connect with people in person by sharing your LinkedIn QR code:
Tap the search bar in LinkedIn
Select the QR code icon
Let others scan it to connect instantly
This is especially useful at networking events.
Posting & engagement basics
You don’t need to post all the time, but if you do:
You can schedule posts in advance
LinkedIn performs best Monday–Friday, primarily:
Before work
During lunch hours
If you post, be prepared to:
Respond to comments
Acknowledge engagement
Even liking or replying briefly helps build momentum and visibility.
LinkedIn rewards interaction, not perfection.
Key takeaway
You don’t need to do everything.
Connecting thoughtfully, engaging intentionally, and showing up consistently is enough to build real momentum over time.
